Formerly known as William Gilbane and Brother, the company was founded in 1873 by William H. Gilbane and his brother, Thomas. It is a fifth-generation, family-owned business. Gilbane Building Company and Gilbane Development Company operate as a subsidiary of Gilbane, Inc.

Headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island, the company has 49 office locations worldwide. Landmark projects include the Casino in Roger Williams Park in Providence, and the President's House at Brown University.
Gilbane Inc.'s subsidiary, Gilbane Building Company, has 69 active projects in New York City, including 55 Hudson Yards, Dock 72 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and an Upper East Side condominium as of August 2017.
Notable projects of Gilbane's other subsidiary, Gilbane Development Company, include facilities in Campustown for Iowa State University students and the first "purpose-built" student housing, 257 Thayer, in Providence, RI.
In 2017 Gilbane Inc. completed a $10-million renovation of its Providence headquarters.
